The Chairman explained that Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972 gave authority for the District Council at a specially convened meeting to confer the title of Honorary Alderman on former Councillors who, in the opinion of Council, had rendered eminent service to the community.  Mrs Elizabeth Lois Shields, Mr Brian Maud and Mr Charles Robert Wainwright had distinguished themselves by satisfying that criteria and, accordingly, this Special Meeting had been convened.

Apologies for absence were received from Councillors Clark, Delaney, Duncan, Frank, Graham, Middleton, Potter and Windress, and Honorary Alderman Jenkins.

Apologies were also received from Councillor Garbutt Moore who would be arriving late.

That pursuant to the provisions of Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, the title of Honorary Alderman of Ryedale District Council be conferred upon

Elizabeth Lois Shields

in recognition of the eminent service rendered by her as a Councillor of the Ryedale District Council from 1980 to 2019.

Councillor Keal moved and Councillor Burr seconded:

“That pursuant to the provisions of Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, the title of Honorary Alderman of Ryedale District Council be conferred upon

Elizabeth Lois Shields

in recognition of the eminent service rendered by her as a Councillor of the Ryedale District Council from 1980 to 2019.”

On being put to the vote, this motion was unanimously approved.

The Chairman of the Council then made a presentation of the Honorary Alderman’s Illuminated Address and Plaque.

Honorary Alderman Mrs E L Shields responded to debate and thanked Council for conferment of the honour.

That pursuant to the provisions of Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, the title of Honorary Alderman of Ryedale District Council be conferred upon

Brian Maud

in recognition of the eminent service rendered by him as a Councillor of the Ryedale District Council from 1985 to 1989 and 1999 to 2019.

Councillor Raper moved and Councillor Goodrick seconded:

“That pursuant to the provisions of Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, the title of Honorary Alderman of Ryedale District be conferred upon

in recognition of the eminent service rendered by him as a Councillor of the Ryedale District Council from 1985 to 1989 and 1999 to 2019.”

On being put to the vote, this motion was unanimously approved.

Honorary Alderman B Maud responded to debate and thanked Council for conferment of the honour.

in recognition of the eminent service rendered by him as a Councillor of the Ryedale District Council from 1995 to 2019.

Councillor Arnold moved and Councillor Cleary seconded:

“That pursuant to the provisions of Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, the title of Honorary Alderman of Ryedale District Council be conferred upon

Charles Robert Wainwright

in recognition of the eminent service rendered by him as a Councillor of the Ryedale District Council from 1995 to 2019.”

On being put to the vote, this motion was unanimously approved.

The Chairman of the Council then made a presentation of the Honorary Alderman’s Illuminated Address and Plaque.

Honorary Alderman C R Wainwright responded to debate and thanked Council for conferment of the honour.
